UNC Health Care Supervisor, Central Sterile in Goldsboro, North Carolina

Summary:

The Central Sterile Supervisor provides direct oversight and planning of activities involved in the acquisition, storage, decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, repair, disinfection of all medical and surgical instrumentation and/or equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions for use and standards of care.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides direct oversight of decontamination, cleaning, inspecting, preparation, packaging, sterilization, transport, and maintenance of surgical instrumentation and equipment.

  2. Supervises teammates who process, store, distribute, issue, and stock surgical instruments and medical equipment to all patient care areas, clinics and specialty areas.

  3. Maintains day-to-day operations, plans daily shift schedule or changes based on manpower scheduling and the needs of the areas serviced.

  4. Coordinates daily work assignments and requests for schedule changes.

  5. Ensures processes are efficient and adhere to safe and secure practices. This includes unidirectional clean to dirty workflow, PPE adherence, monitoring of airflow, and unit traffic, humidity and temperature.

  6. Ensures teammates are aware of and adhere to relevant policies and procedures, including infection control guidelines.

  7. Provides education to teammates on regulatory standards and compliance, current sterile processing practice issues, and safety standards. Ensures the delivery of a structured departmental orientation program to meet the needs of new Central Sterile teammates. Conducts team meetings and in-service training as needed.

  8. Serves as administrator for the asset tracking system (tagging) and replace of equipment batteries. Maintains the assigned storage area for overflow of specified patient care equipment.

  9. Ensures daily patient care area rounds are completed and documented.

  10. Acts as a resource concerning instrument and equipment inventory.

  11. Performs direct observation of processes to ensure departmental efficiency, quality, and compliance with accepted industry standards (i.e., TJC, AAMI, AORN).

  12. Coordinates in-service schedule for new instruments and equipment. Ensures proper education and/or written instructions have been provided to teammates prior to processing.

  13. Coordinates loaner instrumentation intake, processing and timely removal from site after use. This includes communication with associated vendor and operating room team.

  14. Ensures quality testing is performed per guidelines. (i.e., steam, Vpro, IUSS, etc.).

  15. Maintains adequate supply levels for all departmental supplies including emergency crash carts. Addresses supply issues in a timely manner with materials management.

  16. Participates in interviewing, hiring, performance evaluations, and the progressive disciplinary process for Central Sterile teammates.

  17. Develops and manages collaborative relationships with leaders, teammates, customers, and physicians.

  18. Communicates and provides resolutions for any procedural problem that may impact the customer.

  19. Promotes a positive work environment with open communication to include encouragement and counseling. Participates in activities to grow team member’s knowledge and autonomy.

Other information:

Education

High School diploma or GED required.

Licensure/Certification

Current certification by CBSPD or HSPA

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in sterile processing required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to lead, guide and motivate others.

• Detailed knowledge of medical terminology.

• Detailed knowledge of sterilization and cleaning processes, documentation and delivery of sterile packages.

• Detailed knowledge of major surgical instruments preparation and assembly, inspection and packaging.

• Experience with instrument tracking system.

• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with teammates, supervisors, providers, administration and patients.

• Strong attention to detail with the ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.

• Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize and reprioritize scheduling of work.

• Ability to work in a physically demanding, high stress environment.

• Good manual dexterity.

• Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
